Quantification of cardiac fiber orientation using optical coherence tomography.

چکیده
Heterogeneity in cardiac tissue microstructure is a potential mechanism for the generation and maintenance of arrhythmias. Abnormal changes in fiber orientation increase the likelihood of arrhythmia. We present optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a method to image myofibers in excised intact heart preparations. Three-dimensional (3-D) image sets were gathered from the rabbit right ventricular free wall (RVFW) using a microscope-integrated OCT system. An automated algorithm for fiber orientation quantification in the plane parallel to the wall surface was developed. The algorithm was validated by comparison with manual measurements. Quantifying fiber orientation in the plane parallel to the wall surface from OCT images can be used to help understand the conduction system of the specific sample being imaged.

Clinical Applications of Optical Coherence Tomography in Ophthalmology
Assessment of the peripapillary nerve fiber layer and macular thickness can be determined in ophthalmology using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Decreased nerve fiber layer thickness and macular ganglion cell thickness in optic nerve ischemia have been correlated with visual field loss. OCT allows deep optic nerve head evaluation which helps understand pathophysiology of diseases. Furtherm...
متن کاملQuantification of fiber orientation in the canine atrial pacemaker complex using optical coherence tomography.
The atrial pacemaker complex is responsible for the initiation and early propagation of cardiac impulses. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), a nondestructive imaging modality with spatial resolutions of ∼1 to 15 μm, can be used to identify unique fiber orientation patterns in this region of the heart. Functionally characterized canine sinoatrial nodes (SAN) (n=7) were imaged using OCT up to ∼1...
متن کاملImaging myocardial fiber orientation using polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography
Knowledge of myocardial fiber architecture is essential towards understanding heart functions. We demonstrated in this study a method to map cardiac muscle structure using the local optical axis obtained from polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PSOCT). An algorithm was developed to extract the true local depth-resolved optical axis, retardance, and diattenuation from convention...

Abnormal changes in orientation of myofibers are associated with various cardiac diseases such as arrhythmia, irregular contraction, and cardiomyopathy. To extract fiber information, we present a method of quantifying fiber orientation and reconstructing three-dimensional tractography of myofibers using optical coherence tomography (OCT). A gradient based algorithm was developed to quantify fib...
متن کاملDetermination of birefringence and absolute optic axis orientation using polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography with PM fibers.
A novel polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) system was developed using polarization maintaining (PM) optical fibers and fiber coupler to measure birefringence properties of samples. Polarization distortion due to PM fibers and coupler can be calibrated with different polarization states during two consecutive A-scans. By processing the analytical interference fringe sig...
